DOFF cleaning is the method of using high heat and high pressure to remove unwanted matter such as paint, graffiti, chewing gum, moss, algae, and fungi, without damaging the underlying surface. Due to there being no need for chemicals, it’s popular in busy environments and public places as it causes little disruption.
Choosing the wrong cleaning method is a major cause of damage to historic type masonry buildings. While pressure washing may be appropriate in some cases, this can also be very destructive to various historic masonry surfaces. DOFF cleaning can achieve 150oC at the nozzle end and the operator is able to vary the temperature and pressure to remove many types of paint or biological matter. The steam/superheated water will also kill off the spores so there is no need to use a chemical biocide in the removal or as a protection against further biological activity.
When the temperature in the system is high the pressure on the surface being cleaned is very gentle and the volume of water is low. The surface is therefore not saturated and will be dry within minutes.
